First Prize/Adult: Liz Papazian for her poem “Cypress Song.”
I find glory in not fitting in as I bend gracefully
With roots clutching the sand like an enormous octopus
My bulbous trunk bottom simmers like an onion
In the marsh’s broth, nourishing my soul
Nature is my domain, where I grow from beneath the water
My roots morph into sand and although short, I feel majestic
Leaves quiver and drip moisture from thick sweet scented air
Water lilies dance at my feet: there is no greater peace.
Sinewy and feathery arms draped over my trunk
Sometimes melancholy, mostly proud
The mighty oaks in my neighboring northern mountains
cannot survive with me in my bayou.
Clinging to the shore, the splendor of my being
Reflected in the sunshine on the water
More brilliant than a mountain of gold
My roots remind me that I cannot be transplanted.
Second Prize/Adult: Ann Dunbar for her “Ode to St. Vincent’s.”
ODE TO SAINT VINCENT’S
Dear St. Vincent’s – think of me
When I go down in history
Please remember the pills and talks
The grounds and privileges, and supervised walks.
The quiet room and medication
The diagnosis and preparation
The pass home to check on behavior
Going to chapel to pray to Our Savior
Pray for a cure from mental illness
Strive to improve and achieve our wellness
Asking the nurse for a “p.r.n.”
Waiting to see if the Doctor is in
Sharing food in the cafeteria
Waiting for snacks; listening to the “Ave Maria.”
Going to bed, all lights out
Hoping nobody decides to yell and shout
In conclusion let me say, if I may
That tomorrow is another day
And if I live; I will pray and pray.
Honorable Mention/Adult to Carol Shapiro for her poem “Spring.”
The turkeys are in the yard again
Three toms in love
They strut on knobby turkey feet
And fill the air with their importance
Feathers fluffed, their tails
Unfurl in perfect fans.
They circle and dance
And call to one another :
Look at me
Only I am worthy of love.
All for the hen
She scratches the dirt
And looks bored.
