Coming from a Youth & Young Adult background, I have read my share of YA series fiction and have loved pretty much everything, the good the bad and the ugly. Here are a few of my favorites that have wide appeal and are just a whole lot of fun. And you won’t have to wait for the next installment, these have already been published. This series, first published in 2008, is high fantasy, creative world building with loads of action and adrenaline. The first story focuses on Katsa and Po both “Gracelings” with unusual powers. Only some are born with these extreme and often, feared skills. Katsa must stand up to the brutal King Randa to help make the seven kingdoms a better place. She does this through self discovery and with the help of Po, unveils the secrets of those who wish the kingdom harm. The next two installments are focused on smaller characters from the first novel, developing and revealing these players as heroes or villains that grapple with the ultimate evil, King Leck.
No fantasy here! Well, maybe just a little. Belly, her mother and brother have always gone to her mother’s best friend, Susannah’s summer house for as long as she can remember. Susannah, and her two boys, Conrad and Jeremiah are part of her family. But this summer everything is different the boys are older and so is she and what was once kids-stuff is now beginning romance and serious flirtations. While Belly is trying to navigate her new relationships with both Conrad and Jeremiah, Susannah has a secret that she has been keeping that will change everything for everyone for summers to come.
This supernatural trilogy begins with Allison, a human that barely scrapes by after a devastating plague has ravished the country. When she is attacked and fatally wounded a vampire saves her life. Unwilling to accept her new nature she masquerades as a human to help the rest of the human population find a fabled safe haven called Eden. Don’t let this “not another vampire novel” fool you it is full of well developed characters and dark dystopian adventure.
