Check out Lisa Scottoline’s latest book One Perfect Lie. Ms. Scottoline is one of my favorite authors and she does not disappoint.
I was turning the page as quickly as I could when the main character Chris Brennan, is hired to work as a teacher at Central Valley High School in Pennsylvania. He tells you that his papers are all fake and that he had no experience as a teacher. You want to intervene and say, “don’t hire him.” Nevertheless, his false papers are impressive and he is quickly hired by the principal.
His backstory is revealed in the first third of the book. Chris was also hired as the assistant varsity baseball coach. His intensive research has narrowed his focus to three team members, Raz Sematov, Jordan Larkin and Evan Kostis. The stories of the three teens and their mothers alternate by chapter. Chris became attached to his players as their stories unfolded. His fellow teachers work hard to ingratiate themselves with Chris. A popular Language Arts teacher kills himself and the faculty and student body is in mourning. Only Chris believes that the teacher was murdered. His boss tries to re-assign him; Chris stubbornly refuses and persists in his search, knowing one of his team players is involved in a possible murderous plot.
Be prepared for a fast-paced, high energy ending that leaves you wanting more from Ms. Scottoline.
