The Library will impose additional fees related to the recovery of overdue materials.
Responsibility of Cardholder
You are responsible for all material borrowed on your card or your child's library card. Report lost cards immediately. We encourage patrons to pay all extended use fees promptly. You are financially accountable for all unreturned items charged to your library barcode number.
Due Date Receipts
Due date receipts are printed for all materials checked out. Be sure to check carefully for due dates, and keep receipts handy in case you have questions.
Forgotten Cards
You may borrow materials for a $0.50 fee. One ID is required, preferably a driver's license or photo identification. YOU MAY BORROW ONLY ON YOUR OWN CARD.
Library Materials Recovery Procedure
Effective: January 1, 2010
In order to reduce the tax burden on residents of the Town of Greenburgh, the Library will be partnering with Unique Management, a materials recovery agency, for the purpose of recovering lost or un-returned library materials. The following is an outline of the new Library Materials Recovery Procedure.
Library items returned on time incur no penalty and no fines are assessed.
Library items not returned by the date due will begin to incur overdue fines.
After 60 days from the date materials were due, Westchester Library System will contact you and attempt to recover the items. You will be assessed any overdue fines plus the cost of the item if it has been lost.
After 75 days from the date materials were due, Unique Management will take over the recovery process.
Unique Management will contact you in an attempt to recover items you have and you will be assessed a $15 fee plus all overdue fines, and if the item has been lost or damaged, you'll also be assessed the full replacement cost of the item.
After 120 days from the date materials were due, Unique Management will report the total money owed by you to the Library ($15 UM fee + overdue fees + cost of lost item) to the three major national credit reporting agencies, Experian, Trans-Union and Equifax.
Always return your borrowed items on time.
Vacation Loans
Holders of valid Westchester library cards may request up to an 8-week vacation loan on Greenburgh Public Library books, EXCEPT Express, New Books, travel books, items on reserve and Job information Center materials. Extended vacation loans are not available for materials other than books.
Reserves
Materials not available in this library may be borrowed from another library in Westchester County. Reserves may be done via the Internet using the Westchester Library System's online catalog or by calling the Reference Desk (914)721-8225. As of August 1, 2009 the Greenburgh Library will charge a $.50 fee applied to all reserve items not picked up by the patron.
Note: No reserves taken on Express Items and Magazines.
Renewals
Items may be renewed one time only, either in person, on the Internet or by calling Telecirc at 674-4169. If calling, be sure to have your library card and the items you want to renew with you. Renewals may be done via the Internet on this site: www.greenburghlibrary.org, Reserve/Renew.
Note: You may not renew Express Items, Magazines and items on reserve.
Interloan
Books not available through the Westchester Library System may be borrowed from an outside library. Requests are made at the Adult Reference Desk or by calling (914)721-8225. As of August 1, 2009 a $.50 fee will be charged for those items that are not picked up by the patron.
Requests for Purchase
If the library does not have something you think we should, please write out the details on a Request for Purchase slip, which is available at the Information Desk.
Return Policy
Items may be returned to any public library or Westchester Library book drop in Westchester County.
Note: Express Books and Interloaned Books should be returned to the Greenburgh Library.
Bookdrops
For your convenience, the outdoor bookdrops are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Greenburgh Library. There is also a book and media drop for Greenburgh items at the Hartsdale Train Station. If for some reason the bookdrops are full, DO NOT leave items next to or on top of the drop.
Lost or Damaged Books
The Library DOES NOT accept replacement items as substitution for lost or damaged items. The patron is responsible for the COST OF THE ITEM and any OVERDUE FINE INCURRED.
Freedom Of Information
The Board of Trustees of the Greenburgh Public Library reaffirms the basic principle of freedom of information. Library users access the Internet at their own discretion as is the case with other library materials; the restriction of a child's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian. We strongly recommend that parents take an active interest in, and are totally responsible for their children's on-line use. In the Children's Library, we offer both unfiltered and filtered Internet access to enable parents to exercise their choice of access for their children.
Internet Policy
Internet access is available on selected terminals for all users. The Internet allows users to connect to networks of resources outside the Library. The Library has no control over these resources, nor does it have complete knowledge of what is on the Internet. The Library does not warrant that the information available through its Internet connection is accurate, authoritative, factual, timely or useful and does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for the content of information available through its Internet connection. The Greenburgh Public Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from use of its electronic services, or from its connections to other Internet services through our provider.
E-Mail
Users may access their web-based e-mail accounts but may not load their own software. Caution in providing private information is strongly urged. The user assumes all risk.
Special Services
Given the unique nature of the Internet, the Trustees and staff have developed the following services, which are designed to enhance the community's access to this electronic information resource:
- Web Site. The Library staff maintains a web site, which includes a variety of destinations and search tools to help you navigate the World Wide Web. The staff will periodically monitor these selections. Please be aware, however, that these sites can change rapidly and unpredictably without staff's knowledge.
- Filtering. Filtering software has been purchased and installed on one computer in the children's area for those who want to reduce the probability that inappropriate material may appear. The software package was purchased based on reviews in professional journals. The Library will not edit the blocks provided by the software package. It is essential to recognize that this filtering software may not block all of the sites that you or your child may find objectionable. Furthermore filtering software may prevent useful, helpful sites from being accessed. As with the other computers providing Internet access, the Library cannot control the information that appears. Copies of pamphlets entitled "The Librarian's Guide to Cyberspace for Parents & Kids" are available at the Children's desk, free of charge.
Instruction
Library staff will assist patrons with Internet use as time permits, but cannot offer one-on-one personal instruction. The Library is starting to once again offer introductory courses on Internet use. Patrons seeking instruction may speak with a Reference Librarian regarding computer courses being offered or call 721-8225.
Pornography/Violence
Patrons using the Internet are not segregated from the general public. Thus inappropriate material, like graphic pornography and violence is easily viewed by other patrons, including minors and staff, who are in the vicinity of the Internet terminals. The Library regards viewing graphic pornography or violence on the Library premises as harassment and will require the viewer to stop viewing such material or leave the premises.
Copyright
It is assumed that information and resources accessible through the Internet connection belong to the individuals and organizations which own or hold rights to such resources and information, unless it is specifically stated otherwise by these owners or holders of rights. In particular, it is important to respect the legal protection that is provided by copyright and licenses to programs and data.
Compliance
You cannot use the Greenburgh Public Library Internet for purposes contrary to state or federal laws. It is unacceptable to use the Greenburgh Library Internet to interfere with or disrupt other users, services or equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, distribution of unsolicited advertising, so called chain letters, "spamming", propagation of computer worms, viruses, installation of .suid or .rhosts files, or any attempt whatsoever to go to superuser status. No attempts at "cracking"—whether internal or external--will be tolerated. Such activities may result in loss of library privileges and criminal prosecution. Use of the Greenburgh Internet connection is intended for private, non-commercial activities and does not permit unauthorized sales and marketing of products or services.
Printing
The Greenburgh Library currently charges $.15 per page for copies, black-and-white printing from word processing or Internet pages, unfortunately we are no longer able to offer color printing. Printing costs are subject to change.
