  • Six Days in October: The Stock Market Crash of 1929, by Karen Blumenthal (Required) —This comprehensive review of the events, personalities, and mistakes behind the Stock Market Crash of 1929 features photographs, newspaper articles and cartoons of the day.

  • A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, by Mark Twain —Hank Morgan, cracked on the head by a crowbar in the 19th century, wakes up to find himself in the England of King Arthur.   • Crispin: Cross of Lead, by Avi —This historical fiction narrative follows the frantic flight of a thirteen-year-old peasant boy across 14th century England.
  • Land of Hope, by Joan Nixon —Rebekah, a fifteen-year-old Jewish immigrant arriving in New York City in 1902, almost abandons her dream of getting an education when she is forced to work in a sweatshop.
  • Lord of the Flies, by William Golding —In this classic tale, a group of English school boys are left on an unpopulated island to confront the defects of both their society and their own natures.
  • Silas Marner, by George Eliot —A gentle linen weaver who is wrongly accused of a heinous theft goes into seclusion. He then finds redemption in his unselfish love for an abandoned child who mysteriously appears at his cottage.
  • War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells —As life on Mars becomes impossible, Martians and their terrifying machines invade the earth.
