Ricardo Zamudio, Actor who in 1999 joined “The Obie Award Winning Spanish Repertory Theatre” in New York City. We know him better as the artist who created the Empire State Pennies “Just A Penny,” a tribute to the many lives lost during the attack on the Twin Towers – September 11th, 2001.
It took a lot of pennies and a lot of sections each weighing 40 and up to 75 pounds. The structural frame housed an electrical circuit which brought a red, white and blue light each night to the Empire State’s tower above the anxious grip of King Kong. Many families and admirers stopped by and posed for pictures next to Mr. Zamudio’s penny sculpture.
The “Just A Penny” Empire State Building stood in the Lobby near the base of the stair case for 4 years from 2013 – 2016! The piece avoided a near miss when a car ran into the library in 2015 crashing through a pane of glass just inches away. We will all miss Mr. Zamudio’s tribute to those lost in 9/11 and our ability to contribute our penny in memorial. Thank You to Ricardo and the entire Zamudio family for sharing with us their treasure! The sculpture will be presented to a location near ground zero for many others to enjoy.
