A creepy thrilling ride. Love, murder, mayhem, chaos, all make a business-as-usual kind of ride.
Jane and Emma are two women who have lived in the same state-of-the art house at different times. Both fell in love with the mysterious and unusual architect Edward Monkford. Both had to fill out extensive surveys and paperwork to determine if they were a “right fit” for the house. The house was available for a very low rental price that was irresistible to many but few got. Jane’s best friend determines that both women had an uncanny resemblance to Edward’s wife who was buried on the grounds of the house.
Believe her or not? Emma’s story of an attack that caused her and her boyfriend to move in to the house quickly unravels. As her story unravels, she is quicker to break up with her boyfriend Simon.
Jane, after recovering from her miscarriage, is quick to take up with an exciting lover like Edward.
There are many intricate details in this story that builds to a gigantic cliffhanger. One woman’s story ends and another is simply introduced. You want to believe it is one character and then the killer is identified as someone else. All your attention is focused on the house and the man who built it. Not too much detail about the neighborhood or outsiders.
To no surprise, a movie is coming out based on the book. Quick chapters along the lines of Girl on the Train. I was reminded a bit of Fifty Shades of Gray with how Edward takes control of his women. Exciting, made-for-Hollywood read? Yes. At the same time, this title may be quickly be forgotten when bigger names and stories with more depth come out in 2017.
