Your library card truly is a passport. The days of simply checking out two or three books are ancient history now. I’m Laura, Senior Library Clerk, and I’m here to list the reasons why you should get a library card!
First stop, if you are a Greenburgh resident you can apply right online for a card! Just go to our website, www.greenburghlibrary.org and click on “Library Information.” Then you will want to click on the link for “Get or Renew Your Library Card.”
Let’s start old-school: Placing Holds.
Your library card gives you access to all the public libraries in Westchester County. Even though Greenburgh is one of the larger libraries in the system, we don’t have everything. We are lucky to live in such a diverse area: different communities end up with different collections, and you can use them all!
Books in transit between WLS libraries
This is where the Westchester Library System AKA WLS comes in. You can use the public catalog on any device that has access to the internet. You can also ask a librarian to assist you. Through the catalog you can browse and take advantage of some special collections: see an award-winning DVD from the Jacob Burns Film Center Curated Collection at the Mt. Pleasant Library. Read some children’s books from the Spanish Language collection at Warner Library in Tarrytown. Find that rare book you remember from your childhood in the Central Library collection in Mt. Vernon. Try some new skills with knitting books from the Chappaqua Library, home of the Westchester Knitting Guild. Here at Greenburgh, we’re known for our extensive CD collection.
Do you need six copies of a title for your next book group meeting? Do you want a hardcover copy of Gone With the Wind? A librarian at the Information Desk on the second floor can help you with specific requests.
The best part? Place the hold and pick it up at the Greenburgh Library at your convenience. To place your hold, you’ll just need your library card number and your PIN (usually the last 4 digits of your phone number). Most items arrive within a week or so, though there may be a longer wait for very popular items, such as blockbuster movies or hot bestsellers. When your item arrives at the library, we’ll notify you (via email, phone message or text message) and we’ll hold it for ten days.

If you’re looking for a book that isn’t held by any Westchester library, don’t give up hope! In that case we can place an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) and get that book from another library. This system includes public and academic libraries, and has a very wide reach.
Whatever it is you’re looking for, chances are excellent that you’ll find it close to home!
