Job Tips for The Virtual World: Interviews

Preparing for an interview can be one of those dreaded tasks that we all try to put off to the last minute. Figuring out how to prove that you are the best fit for the job is hard enough in person, now you have to factor in that most job interviews right now are virtual. Learning how to stand out in a group is hard enough, how do you do this on a computer screen? Here are some tips and tricks on how to make yourself and your resume stand out virtually!

Set the stage: Virtual interviews have an added step to them. Before starting the interview, make sure you have the right environment. There are two basic things you will want to make sure you cover: atmosphere and technology. Make sure you are in a quiet area that will limit interruptions and is well lit. If you can find a blank wall or room that has a bare background, that works best, but if not, try to stay away from windows and rooms that are busy. This can be distracting for the interviewer. You will also need to factor in technology. Are you using WiFi or a hardwired computer? If you are using WiFi, make sure you are in a good range so that your picture and audio don’t cut in and out. If you only have a hardwired computer, that’s fine too! Just make sure to try to apply the tips as best as you can to that area.

Housekeeping: Make sure your computer is updated. The day or two before, run any necessary technology updates. You never want to be in a position where your computer needs to do a system update when you turn it on for the interview. This could either make you late for your interview or the software might not be compatible with your new updates. It’s always best to give yourself time to work out the kinks beforehand.

Show your confidence: Just like in an in-person interview, maintain eye contact and actively listen to the interviewer. It is okay to pause and take a few seconds to think about the question before answering. Keep in mind that there may be a delay with virtual interviews, so a few second break can never hurt! You will also want to be cognizant of your body language. Make sure to sit up straight and keep the camera focused at eye level. Although it can be hard at times, make sure you are looking at the camera and not the computer screen. One trick is to put a post it by the camera as a reminder.

Prepare: Similar to an in-person interview, make sure you are prepared with your resume printed out and have done research on the company you are interviewing with. Just because you are on the computer does not mean you should do your research at the same time as the interview.

Practice: Along with practicing interview questions, it is essential to conduct practice sessions using the software. With your Westchester Library System library card, you have access to Lynda.com that has different courses on how to interview effectively. Do some research on the product and make sure you know the basic functions. It’s always best to test out your microphone and sound with another person to make sure it is at the right level.
