What is a Civil Service job and how do you go about finding one?

Here are some tips on how to navigate your way through the Westchester County Civil Service system.

Westchester County Department of Human Resources posts a list of current job openings each week. Scroll down the page on the website to see the filing dates for applications, job description and qualifications for each position.  Applications must be sent no later than the "Post Until" date to the person specified on the job posting.

The exams are specific to a job or a class of jobs (for example, there might be a specific test for an air conditioning mechanic, but one clerical test might suit for 10 or 12 different titles), and are scheduled as a previous eligible list expires or diminishes as people are hired from it.

The XD10 is the Application you must complete and submit for each position for which you are applying.  There is a $40.00 fee per application.

You can sign up to receive email announcements of upcoming Westchester County examinations. You’ll be notified on a weekly basis when new announcements are issued.

The library offers test preparation material online, as well as hard copy which is available for checkout.

Search the library catalog for Civil Service Exam practice tests.
