New Study Rooms at the Library

Did you know the library has two new study rooms in our adult reading room?   We received a grant from the state to help us create the glass-walled rooms where individuals or small groups can work together without disrupting the quiet environment around them.  The study rooms are available to library card holders for up to two hours on a first come first served basis.  We don’t accept reservations for the rooms either in person or over the phone, so be sure to present your library card at the reference desk on the second floor to use either of the rooms.

Libraries have long been characterized as quiet places where residents can come to do research, study, and read or write in silence.  Over the last decade or so, libraries have become much more dynamic in the services and programs they offer and how their space is used.  Consequently, they’ve become much more noisy places.  Greenburgh Library has certain areas that have more noise than others.  The children and teen areas on the second floor, for example, are buzzing with activity and voices most of the day, as kids and teens engage all manner of fun learning and socializing.  The adult reading room, on the other hand, is extremely quiet, a place where conversations are kept soft and to a minimum and cell phone use is prohibited.  Our lobby on the first floor is very active and often loud because this is where tables are filled with friends in conversation or playing games, cell phone use is allowed, and snacks may be enjoyed. 

By having different areas of the library where noise and types of activity vary, we are doing our best to accommodate the whole array of ways our patrons want to use the library.  If you have any suggestions on how to improve your experience of the library, feel free to let me know.  You can email me at director@greenburghlibrary.org.
